COMMON PARKINSON'S SYMPTOMS AND STRATEGIES

Parkinson's Disease is Not a One-Size-Fits-All Disease!

Although those diagnosed with Parkinson's disease have many symptoms in common, each person's journey is very distinct. Some symptoms may already be manifesting; others might not or will begin months/years down the road. 


Here are some of the common symptoms and some strategies to combat them:

Tremors

Impact: 

  • Is tiring, causes fatigue
  • Can cause weight loss
  • Worse with anxiety/stress


Strategies:

  • Medication on time every time (set alarms)
  • Exercise
  • Monitor weight
  • Weighted utensils and pens
  • Signature line/square

Bradykinesia/Akinesia

Impact:

  • Slowness
  • Stiffness
  • Risk of falls
  • Pain


Strategies:

  • Medication on time every time (set alarms)
  • Exercise
  • Allow time, don't rush
  • Use walking aids, if needed
  • Concentrate on one task at a time

Speech

Impact:

  • Reduced volume (soft voice syndrome)
  • Slurred speech
  • Changed speech rate
  • Monotone
  • Reduces socialization


Strategies:

  • Exercise/Use diaphragm 
  • Maintain socializing
  • Listen carefully
  • Allow time to respond
  • Mentally rehearse what they want to say

Anxiety/Depression/Panic attacks

Impact:

  • Reduces quality of life
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Social withdrawal


Strategies:

  • Monitor for signs
  • Medication
  • Counseling
  • Music, art therapy
  • Support group/activities
  • Exercise

Swallowing

Impact:

  • Weight loss
  • Risk of aspiration/pneumonia
  • Drooling


Strategies:

  • Medication on time every time (set alarms)
  • Do not rush eating; take time, chew well
  • Exercises: emphasize mouth & tongue
  • Use weighted cutlery & cups, specialty plates
  • Limit distractions
  • Modify diet for easier eating/drinking
